A door is a finish-carpentry test

Everyone touches the doors. A door that drags on the jamb, swings open on its own, or takes a shove to latch is the first sign a house was finished in a hurry. Getting a door right means getting the opening right — plumb, square, shimmed correctly, with an even reveal all the way around.

That is finish carpentry, not handyman work, and it is what we do. We set the jamb to plumb, hang the door to swing and latch cleanly, and case it so the trim frames it square.

Fixing doors that were done wrong

A lot of our door work is correcting someone else's. Sticking, dragging, gaps at the top, latches that miss — these come from a jamb that was never set plumb. We fix the cause at the opening instead of planing the door down until it looks like it lost a fight.
